For a child’s Microsoft account, use Microsoft Family Safety: turn on web filtering for Edge and add youtube.com to Blocked sites. For your own profile, Edge has no built-in site blocker, so use an extension: a site blocker removes YouTube entirely, while FeedCut keeps it and removes Shorts, the Home feed and the channels you choose.
Coming soon to Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera · Free · No account
If you only need part of YouTube gone, try Hide Shorts and Hide Home feed here first.

A child’s account: Family Safety → your child → Edge → web filtering → Blocked sites → youtube.com. Your own profile: a site-blocking extension. Just the bad parts: FeedCut. A company PC: your IT department, through Edge policies.
If your child signs in to Windows with their own Microsoft account in your family group, Family Safety can filter what they open in Edge. From Microsoft’s help page:
Find your child and choose Go to overview.
Turn on Filter inappropriate websites and searches.
Or go the other way and turn on Only use allowed websites, so your child can open only the sites you list.
Two details from Microsoft make this stronger than it sounds. Filters only work in supported browsers, currently Edge, so when filtering is on, other browsers are blocked to stop it being bypassed. And your child has to be signed in to their Microsoft account in Edge for it to apply. The same settings are in the Family Safety app, under Content filters.
Edge’s own settings have no list of blocked sites for your profile. An extension fills the gap, from Edge Add-ons or the Chrome Web Store, which Edge also supports. Decide first what you’re blocking:
Either way, switch on Allow in InPrivate in edge://extensions, or a private window opens YouTube untouched.
Organizations block sites in Edge with administrator policies, such as a URL block list, and can force YouTube’s Restricted Mode for their network. If YouTube is blocked on a company or school computer, those are the settings in play, and only the IT department can change them.
| Block all of YouTube | Block the parts (FeedCut) | |
|---|---|---|
| Tutorials, lectures, music | Gone | Still there |
| Shorts and the Home feed | Gone | Gone |
| Specific channels and words | — | Blocked everywhere, including search |
| Links people send you | Blocked | Open normally; Shorts links open in the regular player |
A full block is the right call for a young child or for a week-long reset. For everyday use, removing the feeds keeps the useful part of YouTube and takes away much of the pull. Our guide to watching less explains why.
Microsoft says that when web filtering is on, unsupported browsers are blocked so the filter can’t be bypassed. You can unblock a browser on purpose in the app and game filters.
Not in its normal settings. For your own account, the options are an extension, or an administrator policy on a managed computer.
A blocked website and an installed app are separate. On Windows, Family Safety handles apps under app and game filters.
Some site-blocking extensions have schedules. FeedCut doesn’t; it has a 10-minute pause that switches itself back on.
Block channels, words and Shorts everywhere on YouTube. Free, no account, nothing leaves your browser.
