How to block a YouTube channel on iPhone and Android

On a phone, your options depend on whose account it is. For your own account, the YouTube app only has “Don’t recommend channel”, which keeps the channel off your feed but not out of search. For a supervised kid, a parent can block channels outright. A complete block for adults exists only on a computer.

For your own account: “Don’t recommend channel”

  1. Find a video from the channel

On Home or in the list under a video you’re watching.

  2. Tap the ⋮ menu next to its title

The three dots beside the video’s title and channel name.

  3. Choose Don’t recommend channel

The video disappears, and YouTube stops suggesting that channel on Home and in Up next.

It’s the best a phone offers for an adult account, and it has real limits. Search still shows the channel. There’s no list of channels you’ve marked, and undoing one means clearing all of this feedback in your Google account’s activity, as YouTube’s help page explains. It does follow your account, though, so it also applies on your TV and computer.

For a supervised kid: Block channel for kids

If your child signs in with an account you supervise, you can block channels from your own phone. YouTube’s help page gives the steps for the app:

  1. Open the channel page

Signed in with the parent account linked to your child’s.

  2. Tap More, then Block channel for kids

The option only appears on the linked parent account.

  3. Tap Continue, then Block next to your child

Then Done. The channel is blocked wherever your kid is signed in, and in YouTube Kids too if they use the same account.

In the YouTube Kids app

YouTube Kids has its own Block option in the menu next to each video, for a single video or the whole channel. The app asks you to confirm as the parent first. Step-by-step guide.

If it’s the Shorts

Often the channel isn’t the real problem; the Shorts feed is. The YouTube app has a Shorts feed limit: tap You, then Settings, then Time management. It can be set to zero. For your own account it’s a reminder you can dismiss. Set by a parent for a supervised kid in Family Center, it can’t be.

What isn’t possible on a phone

  • Blocking a channel from search on an adult account.
  • Blocking by word, like a show’s name or “prank”.
  • Hiding comments from a particular person under other creators’ videos.

All three work on a computer with FeedCut in your browser. If you watch on both, use “Don’t recommend” on the phone for your feed, and a real block on the laptop, where the rabbit holes run longer.

Questions

Can I block a YouTube channel on my iPhone?

Not for your own account. The YouTube app offers “Don’t recommend channel”, which hides it from your feed but not from search. A real block exists only for a supervised kid, set from the parent’s account.

Does Screen Time or Digital Wellbeing help?

Only with the whole app. Screen Time on iPhone and Digital Wellbeing on Android can limit or block YouTube itself, not a single channel inside it.

Do channels I block on my computer disappear on my phone?

No. FeedCut works in your desktop browser. “Don’t recommend channel” is the one setting that follows your account to the phone.

What does “Block user” do in the app?

It stops that person from commenting on your videos. It doesn’t hide anything they upload, so it isn’t a way to stop seeing a channel.
