How to stop YouTube recommendations at the end of a video

Two things keep you watching when a video ends: autoplay, which starts the next one by itself, and the end screen, a grid of suggestions waiting for a click. YouTube lets you turn off autoplay, but not the end screen. FeedCut hides the end-screen suggestions and the Up next sidebar, so a video simply ends.

Turn on Hide Up next. The sidebar goes, and so do the suggestions that would fill the end of the video.

Step 1: turn off autoplay

According to YouTube’s autoplay help page:

  • On a computer, click the Autoplay switch at the bottom of the video player.
  • In the phone app, tap the Autoplay switch on the player, or go to Settings, then Autoplay.
  • On a TV, open Settings in the YouTube app, then Autoplay.

The setting can differ between devices, so do it once on each. Accounts for ages 13 to 17 start with autoplay off. Casting, smart displays and videos that play as you scroll are covered in turning off autoplay.

Step 2: deal with the end screen

With autoplay off, the countdown stops, but the video still ends on a grid of suggestions. In the last seconds, creators can also add their own end-screen cards pointing to more of their videos. YouTube has no viewer setting for either.

FeedCut’s Hide Up next switch covers both, along with the sidebar of suggestions next to the player:

  1. Open the FeedCut panel

Click its icon in the browser toolbar.

  2. Turn on Hide Up next

The sidebar, the end-screen grid and the creator cards in the final seconds are gone.

  3. Watch to the end

When the video finishes, the player stops. What you do next is your call, not the algorithm’s.

What stays

The video, title and descriptionUnchanged
A playlist you startedStill plays in order
CommentsUnchanged, unless you hide them too
The Up next sidebarHidden
End-screen grid and creator cardsHidden

On a phone

The app has the autoplay switch but nothing for the end screen or the list under the video. If the end of a video is where your evenings slip away, it helps to watch the long stuff on a computer, where you can turn the suggestions off completely.

Questions

Why do I still see suggestions with autoplay off?

Autoplay only stops the next video from starting by itself. YouTube still fills the end of the video with a grid of suggestions for you to click.

Is autoplay off on every device once I turn it off?

No. YouTube says you can have different autoplay settings on different devices, so turn it off on each computer, phone and TV you use.

Can I hide the end screen a creator adds?

Not with YouTube’s settings. Creators add those cards to the last seconds of their videos, and viewers have no switch for them. FeedCut’s Hide Up next clears them along with the suggestion grid.

Will hiding Up next affect my playlists?

No. A playlist you choose still plays in order. Only the suggestions YouTube picks for you are hidden.
