How to block YouTube channels for kids

If your child signs in with a supervised Google account, YouTube lets you block channels from your own parent account. If they watch on a shared computer, signed out or in a regular account, you need a filter in the browser: FeedCut hides the channels you choose across youtube.com and keeps the list behind a PIN.

Pick the option that fits how your kid watches

OptionUse it whenThe catch
Supervised Google accountYour child signs in to YouTube with an account you manage through Family LinkBlocks only apply while they’re signed in to that account
YouTube KidsYounger children who watch in the YouTube Kids appA separate, smaller catalog that older kids outgrow
FeedCut in the browserA family or shared computer, signed in or notWorks in the browser it’s installed in, not on phones or TVs

They also combine well: a supervised account on your kid’s tablet, and FeedCut on the laptop everyone shares.

Block a channel on a supervised account

YouTube’s help page describes the steps on a computer. You need to be signed in with the parent account linked to your child’s, or the option won’t appear.

  1. Open the channel page

Find the channel you want gone and open its page while signed in as the parent.

  2. Open About, then Report user

The About section holds the channel details. The report option sits at the bottom of it.

  3. Choose Block channel for kids

Pick your child and press Block. The channel disappears from what they see on that account, on every device.

This is the strongest lock YouTube offers, because the block lives in your child’s account rather than in a browser. Supervised accounts also come with content settings by age, covered on YouTube’s parental controls page.

Block a channel in YouTube Kids

In the YouTube Kids app, open the menu next to a video, choose Block, and pick the whole channel rather than the single video. The app asks you to confirm as the parent first. Our YouTube Kids guide has the exact steps, and why a blocked channel can come back. It also works the other way round: if your kid uses the same Google account for YouTube and YouTube Kids, a channel you block on YouTube is blocked in YouTube Kids too.

One limit applies to both, in YouTube’s own words: blocking a channel “only blocks content uploaded to that specific channel.” Re-uploads by other channels get through. For those, a word filter on the computer helps.

Block channels on a shared computer

Most homes have at least one computer where nobody is signed in, or where a kid uses a parent’s browser. YouTube has no block button there, so the filter has to live in the browser.

  1. Install FeedCut in the browser your kid uses

From the Chrome Web Store, Edge Add-ons, Firefox Add-ons or Opera add-ons. No account needed.

  2. Press Block channel

On any video or channel page. The channel leaves Home, search, Up next and the comments.

  3. Switch on the “For kids” list

A ready-made starting point. Edit it freely afterwards.

  4. Set a PIN

In FeedCut’s settings. Without it, nobody can unblock a channel or switch FeedCut off.

While you’re there, turn on Hide Shorts. For a lot of parents, the endless swipe is a bigger problem than any one channel.

Close the easy gaps

  • Private windows. Browsers don’t run extensions in private windows unless you allow it. Open FeedCut’s details page and turn on Allow in Incognito in Chrome, Allow in InPrivate in Edge, or Run in Private Windows in Firefox.
  • A second browser. If the computer has two, install FeedCut in both, or remove the one you don’t use.
  • Removing the extension. A PIN stops changes to settings, but any browser lets its user remove an extension. If that’s a real risk at your house, rely on a supervised account, where blocks live in the account.
  • Phones and TVs. FeedCut doesn’t reach the YouTube apps. Use a supervised account or YouTube Kids on those devices: see blocking in YouTube Kids and blocking on a TV.

Questions

Can I block a YouTube channel without a supervised account?

Not inside YouTube. On a regular account the closest option is “Don’t recommend channel”, and the channel still shows up in search. On a shared computer, a browser extension like FeedCut is the way to hide it.

Will my kid notice that a channel is blocked?

Mostly they just won’t see it. Its videos are missing from Home and search, and if they open the channel page directly, FeedCut shows a short “You blocked this channel” page with a Back button. Unblocking needs your PIN.

Does FeedCut work inside YouTube Kids?

No. FeedCut works on youtube.com in a desktop browser. YouTube Kids has its own Block option, described above.

What’s on the “For kids” list?

A starting set of channels and words that most parents don’t want in a child’s feed, like prank and shock channels. Switch it on, then remove anything you’re fine with and add your own.
