How to block YouTube Shorts on Chrome

Chrome has no setting for it, and YouTube’s website only offers to show you fewer Shorts. To turn them off in Chrome, add FeedCut from the Chrome Web Store. Shorts are hidden from the moment it’s installed: the shelf on Home, the Shorts tab, Shorts in search and Subscriptions, all gone.

Hide Shorts is on in a real install. Flip it in the panel to see the Home shelf come and go.

Turn Shorts off in Chrome

  1. Add FeedCut to Chrome

From the Chrome Web Store: Add to Chrome, then Add extension.

  2. Reload YouTube

Hide Shorts is on by default. The Shorts shelf and the Shorts tab are gone.

  3. Pin the panel

Puzzle-piece icon, then the pin next to FeedCut. That’s where the switch lives if you ever want Shorts back.

Every place Shorts hide

Shorts aren’t only a shelf on Home. YouTube tucks them in wherever there’s room:

Hiding the shelf solves half of it. The other half arrives in a group chat: someone sends a Short, you open it, and the vertical player starts feeding you the next one. FeedCut opens every /shorts/ link as a regular video, with a seek bar and no swipe. Without an extension, our Shorts link converter does the same for one link at a time.

Incognito and other profiles

Extensions don’t run in Incognito until you allow them. Open chrome://extensions, click Details under FeedCut and turn on Allow in Incognito. Each Chrome profile has its own extensions, so install FeedCut in every profile where you watch YouTube.

And on your phone?

Chrome on Android and iPhone doesn’t run extensions, and FeedCut can’t reach the YouTube app. The app does have its own Shorts feed limit under Settings and Time management, which goes down to zero. It’s a reminder you can dismiss, but it helps. All the phone options are on our Shorts on a phone page.

Questions

Is there a Chrome setting to turn off YouTube Shorts?

No. Chrome has no YouTube settings, and on the website YouTube only offers “Show fewer Shorts”. The Shorts feed limit exists only in the phone app.

Will Shorts come back when YouTube updates?

FeedCut removes Shorts from the data YouTube sends to the page, not just from the layout, so a redesign is much less likely to bring them back. We check YouTube every day.

Can I keep Shorts from a few channels?

Not with one switch: Hide Shorts removes all of them. If only some Shorts bother you, leave the switch off and block those channels instead.

Does this work on a Chromebook?

Yes. A Chromebook runs the same Chrome, and FeedCut works there the same way.
