If YouTube’s Home page shows a search bar and no videos, check your watch history first. YouTube’s help page says that when you have no significant recent history and have turned history off, it removes recommendations from Home. Turn history back on, watch something, and the feed returns. If history is already on, the checks further down cover the other causes.

Some people want Home empty. Turn on Hide Home feed: the feed goes, and your history keeps working.

According to YouTube’s watch history help page, features like recommendations on the Home page are removed when there’s no relevant recent history and you’ve said you don’t want recommendations based on it. That’s exactly the state after pausing history, and it also applies to a brand-new account before it has watched anything.
Go to myactivity.google.com and sign in with the account you use on YouTube.
In the left sidebar, choose Controls and find YouTube History.
Switch YouTube History back on. You can choose whether it includes your watches and your searches.
Home builds on what you watch after this, so it fills in gradually rather than all at once.
Signed out? Open History in YouTube’s menu and turn watch history back on there. On a TV, the Pause watch history setting is in the app’s Settings.
A blank Home page is what plenty of people are after. YouTube opens on a search bar, and you watch what you came for. There are two ways to get it, and they cost different things:
| Watch history off | FeedCut Hide Home feed | |
|---|---|---|
| Home page | Empty | Empty |
| History you can search later | NoNew watches aren’t saved | YesUnchanged |
| Up next and search | Still shown, with less to go on | Unchanged, or hide Up next too |
| Phone and TV apps | YesFollows your account | NoDesktop browsers only |
| Undo | Turn history on and wait | One switch |
If you watch mostly on a phone, turning history off is the only way to empty Home in the app. On a computer, hiding the feed keeps your history useful: you can still find that video you watched last month.
The Subscriptions feed lists new uploads from channels you follow. It doesn’t need your watch history, so it keeps working while Home is blank.
If you only paused history, the old entries are still there, so yes, over time. If you deleted it, YouTube starts from what you watch next.
Not necessarily. YouTube’s help says Home recommendations are removed when you have no significant recent watch history and have turned history off. Try the checks below before assuming YouTube is down.
Not with YouTube’s settings. On a computer, FeedCut’s Hide Home feed does exactly that: history stays on for you, the feed stays off.
